America rewarded this approach. The country is genuinely strange and varied in ways that the interstate system deliberately bypasses. The old US highway network — Route 66, US-1, the Lincoln Highway — was built to move through places, not around them. Small towns weren't obstacles. They were the road.
The roadside attraction industry understood this perfectly. From the 1930s through the 1980s, an entire economy built itself around the impulse stop. Reptile farms, mystery spots, giant fiberglass animals, folk art installations, diners shaped like coffee cups. These weren't destinations in the formal sense. They were things you found, which was the whole point.
The Guidebook Era: Structured Spontaneity
Even when travelers tried to plan their detours, there was an appealing looseness to it. Books like Roadside America catalogued weird and wonderful stops across the country, but finding them still required navigation by feel. You knew roughly where something was. Getting there was still an adventure.
Tourist information centers — those small buildings at state borders staffed by cheerful volunteers — existed specifically to redirect travelers toward things they hadn't thought to look for. You'd pull in for a restroom and leave with a hand-drawn map to a waterfall nobody on the internet had photographed yet, because the internet didn't exist.

GPS navigation arrived in consumer vehicles in the late 1990s and became genuinely widespread through the 2000s. The efficiency gains were enormous and real. Getting lost stopped being a regular feature of road travel. Drive times became predictable. Unfamiliar cities stopped being navigational nightmares. But the optimization came with a hidden cost. The algorithm's job is to get you there fastest. It has no interest in what's interesting. It knows traffic data and road speeds.

What the Detour Actually Did

Apps like Roadtrippers attempt to surface points of interest along a route. There's a growing appetite for the old model, even if it has to be intentionally reconstructed.
The roadside attraction industry, meanwhile, has adapted. The truly weird and wonderful stops have developed social media presences. The world's largest ball of twine has an Instagram. Discovery still happens — it's just mediated differently now, curated by algorithm rather than stumbled upon by accident.
It works, sort of. But there's a difference between a detour you planned because you saw it on TikTok and a detour you took because a sign surprised you at 65 miles an hour and something in you said yes, that.

GPS gave Americans something genuinely valuable: certainty. You know where you're going. You know when you'll get there. You know the fastest way through.
What it quietly took was the possibility of not knowing — and the particular kind of discovery that lives in that space.
